Semiconductors in Brasil
Brasil is most commonly associated with Beach, Soccer, Caipirinha and maybe Acai na Tigela, but traditionally not with semiconductor industry.
However, after we have seen the rise of semiconductor in Asia – with companies from countries like Taiwan and Korea as major market players – it was only a question of time for Brasil to make their move.
While the rest of the world is tangled up in economic crisis, Brasil has set up a structured program by the Ministry of Science and Technology to build up semiconductor know-how. It invested in IC design education and established design centers, which have already produced some remarkable designs. And when Ceitec S.A. recently even designed and produced the first RFID chips in their Fab. in Porto Alegre, it was noticed (see EE Times, RFID News, MoreRFID, and more).
On a recent trip to Brasil we could convince ourselves that there is talent (with surprisingly long history of circuit design), there is growing infrastructure, and there clearly is a market.
And as Brasil is one of the BRIC nations we know it will not be long, until this move will be felt in the rest of the world.
